Exotic, bird, and small mammal care

Bird, Exotic & Small Mammal Care

Most often, Intermountain Pet Hospital's staff deals with dogs and cats. After all, they're the most common pets that people have. However, those aren't the only animals we deal with.

At Intermountain Pet, we have experience in treating a variety of smaller and exotic pets, including:

  • Birds

  • Reptiles

  • Ferrets

  • Rabbits

  • Hamsters

  • Gerbils

Some people believe that vets treat small and exotic animals just as they do larger ones but with smaller instruments. In truth, these pets require more specialized care. But great or small, we do treat all animals the same in this way: We show them as much care and compassion as possible.

Details of Bird Care

When you get a pet bird, we highly recommend bringing him or her in for a comprehensive exam. This exam can consist of:

  • Checking your bird's weight
  • Checking your bird's stool sample for bacteria and parasites
  • Swabbing areas of the bird's digestive tract
  • Testing for diseases and viruses that your bird could transmit to humans

After the first exam, we also recommend bringing birds in once a year to make sure that they stay in good health.
