Pet obesity can lead to a number of health problems over time. While it's tempting to give in to Fido and Fluffy when they stare at you with those longing eyes, taking measures to avoid overfeeding will give you a happier, healthier pet.

Wondering if your pet is obese? Feel your pet's ribs. If you can feel individual ribs, your pet is probably not overweight. Always check with your vet if you are concerned. And, to help with the future, here are some tips to help you prevent pet obesity.

Understand Portions

Your first step is to learn your pet's caloric requirements. This information can be found online or through your pet food's distributor. Your best bet is to ask your vet to ensure you are feeding the proper amount. When feeding your pet, use a scoop that will accurately measure the amount to avoid over- or under-feedings.

Factor in Treats

Even if you are feeding the recommended amount to your pet, if you are constantly providing snacks and treats, your efforts will be undermined. Keep track of all the treats you give your pet. Choose lower calorie treats (you can even ask your vet for suggestions!) so that every treat counts.

Change up Feeding Habits

Some pets seem hungry all day, and they might benefit from more meals. Break up the total amount you feed into a few smaller meals. Keep your timing consistent, such as feeding once in the morning and once in the evening.
