Find me on:

In November, the American Veterinary Medical Association (AMVA), released their 2017-18 edition of their Pet Ownership and Demographics Source Book and they listed Idaho as having the most dogs! Of course, we were not surprised by the news, but it does beg the question "How do other states stack up to dog, cat and other pet-owning households?"

According to the AVMA Source Book, the highest percentage of dog-owning households at year-end of 2016 were:

  • Idaho - 58%
  • Montana & Arkansas - 52%
  • Mississippi - 52%

The AMVA also listed Idaho as being tied for third on the list of highest percentage of pet-owning households in 2016 were:

  • Wyoming - 72%
  • West Virginia - 71%
  • Idaho, Nebraska, & Vermont - 70%

Those statistics speak volumes to the quality of life the great state of Idaho has for pets and humans. So we looked into what we think makes being a dog and pet owner so great here.

What makes Idaho the Best State for Dogs

Off-leash and Dog Parks

Dogs need to run, and run a lot. Idahoans who live in an apartment or home with a small backyard need some place their pooches can get some serious exercise and play with some other furry friends. Lucky for us, there are several parks that allow for off-leash dogs in Ada County such as:

  • Ann Morrison/Morris Hill in Boise
  • Redwood Park in Boise
  • Storey Park in Meridian

The Treasure Valley also offers parks specifically designed for dogs to be off-leash, and more are planned this year!

  • Nampa Dog Park
  • Meridian Bark Park
  • Sterling Dog Park in Boise
  • Military Reserve Flood Basin Dog Park in Boise

Boise River Greenbelt

The Greenbelt runs for 25-miles along the Boise River. It starts around Harbor Lane and ends close to Eckert Road (past Barber Park). This amazing and unique feature to Boise is perfect for taking your dog on long walks.

Foothills and Mountain Trails

Trails in the Boise foothills and mountains are another attraction for outdoorsy humans and canines. Take your pick of hiking up to Tablerock, taking on hills at Camel's Back Park or head north to the Sawtooth National Forest for some serious mountain hiking. Either route you go, you and Fido will definitely need to pack water and snacks for the adventure.

Pet-Friendly Stores and Restaurants

Sometimes it's fun to take your furry family member out on errands with you knowing he is welcome to come into the store with you. Places like The Home Depot and Lowes (at the Managers discretion), Zamzows, Marshalls, and Sierra Trading Post all allow dogs in the store.

Most restaurants with outdoor seating allow dogs to sit with their owner while they eat. Places like Fork, The Curb, 10 Barrel Brewing, and Hyde Park Pub & Grill all have a 5-bone rating from Bring Fido's website.

How Does Idaho Rank with Cats?

Idaho was listed as number eight on the list of highest percentage of cat owners. Only about a third of Idaho households own cats compared to Vermont's 45% standing. So we've got some "cat"ching up to do. We couldn't resist.

If you've been on the fence about whether you are going to add a furry family member to your brood, know that you are in good company in Idaho! The IPH team is here to answer any questions about caring for your canines, felines, or any other pet you have in your family.
