Did you know that your cat has evolved to keep information from you? That might seem a little strange, but it's true; natural selection has made sure that cats have a strong urge to hide their pain from possible predators who could take advantage of a sick or injured feline. That's why you might not know if your cat isn't feeling well, or worse is seriously injured or ill.

Instead of being able to communicate with your cat or seeing visible signs of pain, you'll have to rely on behavior to spot your cat's discomfort. It's important that you keep an eye on this, especially as your cat ages or goes through illnesses or surgeries. Here are the classic signs of a hurt cat.

  1. Lameness or no walking
  2. Jumping difficulty
  3. Reluctant to move or favoring legs or paws
  4. Abnormal gait
  5. No grooming
  6. Withdrawn attitude
  7. Low head posture
  8. Squinting
  9. Less appetite
  10. Tail flicking
  11. Licking
  12. Hunching up

If you notice any of these behaviors in your cat, it's time to call your veterinarian. Your vet can help you diagnose what's going on with your feline through a physical exam and possibly further testing or x-rays. It's important to know if your cat is living with chronic or undiagnosed pain or has recently suffered an injury or illness. Staying aware of your cat's wellbeing could save his or her life.
