Tips for a Great Road Trip
1. Make Room for Your Dog! Your dog needs plenty of room to stay safe and be comfortable on your trip. Prepare for plenty of back seat or cargo area room, and make sure his crate fits easily into your vehicle. You'll also want to make sure there's plenty of room for your dog's food, water, and other supplies, and that they are easily accessible.
2. Schedule a Check-Up. A pre-trip checkup at your vet can help you make sure your dog is in good shape for a trip. Your vet will check on vaccinations and can provide documentation proving your dog is in good health. If your dog is prone to car sickness, you can ask you vet for medication to bring along, just in case.
3. Food, Treats, Water & Toys. Don't count on being able to find your dog's regular food and treats while you're on the road. Pack plenty to bring with you—a road trip is no time to try out a new diet. Nonetheless, your dog may enjoy an occasional new tidbit picked up at reputable pet stores along the way. Likewise, packing his favorite toys can help alleviate any anxiety he may have due to new surroundings.
4. Plan for Breaks. It may take 8 hours to get to grandma's house, but with your dog along, the trip may take a bit longer. Plan ahead for breaks—every two hours is a good rule of thumb.
5. Updated ID. Don't forget microchipping and updated tags, including your cell phone number. In the event your dog gets separated from you while, on your trip, these IDs can make sure the separation is short and followed quickly by a happy reunion.
