It's June here in the lovely Treasure Valley and it's about to hit 100+ degrees.

It's true, the heat is coming early and in full force. Now is the time to take a few extra steps to ensuring you and your furry friend have an enjoyable summer.
- See your vet: Make an appointment now with you animal's veterinarian to make sure your dog or cat is in tip-top shape. Trying to deal with heartworms or fleas and ticks in this horrible heat wave is no fun for anyone.
- No parking: It's been said over and over, but it's worth saying again: Do not leave your dog or cat in a parked car if the temperature is 70 degrees or higher. Your fur covered mate is more susceptible to heat stroke than you are. And if that doesn't convince you, think about the possibility of being reported to the authorities and facing Idaho animal cruelty charges.
- Shade is a must: Just like you, animals can get dehydrated quickly when the temperatures start rising. If your pet is outside during the day, make sure he has access to shade at all times and plenty of fresh water.
- Stop the drop: Did you know that during the warmer months there is a dramatic increase in pet injuries and deaths due to falling out of windows (according to the ASPCA.) Now is a great time to make sure your windows screens are secure and can handle an animal's weight.
- Trending trimming: If your pooch has lovely long locks, it's a good idea to trim them up to about one inch. The shorter hairdo will help keep you dog cooler and the one inch of hair will protect his skin from the sun. If you have a cat, consider brushing her coat more often to help keep her cool.
- Pool parties are a no-no: Pets and chlorine, a match they do not make. Dogs will often jump in pools to cool off AND drink the water. The result, one sick doggie.
- Animal Prohibition: An ice cold beer is super refreshing, but not to pets. Alcohol, even in the smallest amount can cause intoxication, depression and put your pet in a coma. If you're going to give Fido anything out of a bottle, make it a Dasani.
