A Stylish Winter Wardrobe
Small or short-haired dogs may benefit from a vest, sweater or coat for extra protection from the elements. Even larger dogs may need a coat of some kind during winters that are exceptionally cold.
Wintertime Grooming
It's important to keep up your grooming routine, even during the winter months.
- Hair that becomes matted may stay wet longer, exposing your dog to the kind of chills that can lead to illness. Continue to brush your dog and visit your groomer on a regular basis to keep your dog's coat in top condition. A well-groomed coat can do its job of keeping your dog warm and toasty.
- Keeping a close eye on paws and nails during the winter is also important. Snow, ice and salt can cause pads to dry and crack. Before a winter walk, it may be helpful to use a soft brush to apply olive or coconut oil to pads for some extra protection. After a walk, check your dog's paws for accumulated ice. If you've encountered salt, be sure to wash your dog's paws thoroughly. Nails can also dry out during the winter and crack, so keep up on nail care to avoid painful breaks.
Keep an Eye on the Weather
Some days may just be too frigid for your usual walk. When temperatures plummet, it may be best to keep walks very short, opting instead for some playful indoor exercise.
