If there's anything more fun than camping, we're not sure what it is. Actually, we do! It's going camping with your dog! Dogs are great companions for outdoor adventures, and with a little forethought and planning, they can stay safe, too!

Before You Head Out

Taking the time to plan ahead can help you avoid trouble.

  • Proper ID is important for anyone heading out on a trip, and your dog is no exception. If your dog breaks away, a microchip can help you relocate him. Also, make sure he has up-to-date ID tags, including a temporary tag indicating where you're camping.

  • Make sure your dog's vaccinations are current, including rabies and distemper. Also take the time to apply a good flea and tick deterrent.

  1. Dehydration is a real issue when you're out in the sun. Watch your dog for signs that she's overheating, like excessive panting, and take plenty of breaks for water. Bring along a water supply, too, and don't let your dog drink from standing water, including ponds and lakes. Certain bacteria can cause illness or even death.

  2. Keep your dog on a leash or harness while camping or hiking. Your dog's curiosity may get the best of him out in the wild, and he may be tempted to investigate a new smell or chase an  animal. Not only do you risk losing him, he could be injured by a wild animal. From skunks and porcupines to bears and wolves, the risk is great.

  3. Lastly, be prepared to keep your dog warm. Mountain temperatures can plummet quickly. If your dog will be sleeping outdoors, put a tarp underneath his bedding to keep moisture from seeping through. Better yet, bring him inside the tent or camper with you!

  4. If something happens to your dog while you're on a camping trip, get her to the nearest veterinarian as quickly as possible. Prepare a list of nearby holistic veterinarians before you leave for your trip. You may not have cell phone coverage in a remote area, and every moment will count while you're trying to find out where to go.
