Your dog's oral health is an important part of her overall well-being, and brushing is as important for her as it is for you. Here's how to go about it!

Ready, Set, Brush!

As with many things in life, well begun is half done. If you've never brushed your dog's teeth, you'll want to give these tips a once-over. It's not quite the same as brushing yours!

  1. Choose the right time. Choose a time when both you and your dog are relaxed, with regularly daily brushing as the ideal. If you can't get to it that often, committing to just three days can make a big difference.
  2. Choose the right equipment. Visit a pet store to find veterinary approved toothpaste and special toothbrushes that are angled just right for your dog's mouth. Doggy-approved toothpaste flavors like chicken, beef and peanut butter will have your dog looking forward to brushing time.
  3. Get gummy. An effective way to introduce your dog to brushing is to rub your finger on his gums and teeth. It may take a few sessions until he's okay with this, but it'll help him get comfortable having your fingers in his mouth.
  4. The taste test. Put some toothpaste on your finger and let your dog lick it. If, after a few tries, she appears not to like it, try a different flavor.
  5. Try out the toothbrush. After your dog gets accustomed to your fingers in her mouth, it's time to try brushing. Angle the brush and clear away plaque, getting up into the gum line. Use circular motions to do the best job. Slight bleeding is okay, but anything that seems excessive is best checked out by your veterinarian.

Keep It Fun

The key to successful brushing is to keep the mood light. Give plenty of praise and above all, have fun!
