Training and behavior for dogs and cats

Training & Behavioral Concerns

At Intermountain Pet Hospital, we believe that pets' bonds with their families become stronger when pet owners understand animal behavior. By understanding why your pets do what they do, you can communicate with your animals better. This allows you to train your pets more effectively.

Animal Behavior Friendly Practice

We train our staff and design our facility to create an environment that minimizes pet anxiety and stress. We structure and prepare for every animal interaction to keep your pets calm and receptive.

Starting Pets Off on the Right Paw

Good communication and training set pets and families up for a lifetime of happiness. By establishing excellent pet-to-owner relations early on, you can prevent behavioral problems in your pets down the road.

Intermountain offers a variety of services to start pets off right. These services include:

  • Pet selection counseling—Some breeds of pets are typically calm while others excel at hunting or working. Thanks to our extensive knowledge and experience with many different breeds, our team can recommend pets that will best fit your family and situation.
  • Puppy and kitten preschool classes—Early training heads off many future behavioral issues. Ask our team for dates and more information.

  • Animal behavior library—We have numerous handouts and booklets that cover training techniques and issues.
  • Pet training tools—For your convenience, we offer training tools to make behavioral training more effective.
  • "Ask the Doctor" nights—You can meet with our veterinarians to ask questions about pet behavior. Check with our veterinary team for upcoming dates and times.

Comprehensive Behavior Problem Treatment

Sometimes, pets can behave in ways that go against the owner's training. In these cases, Intermountain recommends scheduling a behavior analysis and consultation appointment, which involves:

  • Behavior questionnaire—This survey will help our team gather the best and most complete history of the behavioral issue(s).
  • Behavior assessment and physical exam—Many pet behaviors stem from a physical condition. A complete physical exam will rule out any underlying health conditions.
  • Treatment plan—Depending on the root cause(s) of the behavior, treatment may involve medical intervention or behavior modification training. Our trainers all employ positive modification methods.
  • Follow-up consultation—Because fixing behavioral problems takes time, we will check in with your pet and change treatment as needed.
