Find me on:

It’s already halfway through January, and it’s estimated that more than half of the people who made exercise and weight loss resolutions have already abandoned them. And if you’re one of the guilty who have already abandoned the resolution ship, it’s time to get back on; not for your benefit, but for your dog’s.

January is “Walk Your Pet Month,” so we’ve put together some of the reasons to get your shoes, boots, or flip flops and take your cuddly canine on a jaunt around the neighborhood.

1. Get Outside

Relaxing on your sofa with a book, a game on your phone, or binge-watching a series on Netflix is easy. It’s a lot more challenging to convince yourself to get up and take Fido for a walk, especially when it’s windy and only 20 degrees outside. However, one of the most important things you can do for your health is to get outside in the fresh air. Stepping out has so many benefits like lowering your blood pressure, combating depression, and boosting your mood. Taking Fido for a brisk walk is a great way to get outside and stock up the much-needed vitamin D.

2. Exercise!

Whether you set a goal of walking two miles a day or walking 12,000 steps a day, committing to taking your canine with you during your walks is going to be an excellent way for both of you to get much-needed exercise. Walking just one mile will add up to 2000 steps and burn 100 calories.

3. Leash Lessons

If your canine is a serial puller, then your daily walks are a good time to work on leash training. Whether you use a retractable leash or a traditional leash, it’s important to keep your pup close by your side. By keeping your dog by your side, she will be discouraged from bolting, dawdling, or wandering, and more in your control. If you’re unsure how to start with leash training, Rumble and YouTube hold a plethora of videos to help you get started. Always remember to reward your dog with treats when they stay by your side.

4. Explore New Areas in Your Town

Been down to the Green Belt lately? What about Camel’s Back Park? What about the new trails added around Hulls Gulch last year? Now is a great time to explore new places with your pooch on sunny (albeit cold) days. The Treasure Valley has so many great hiking and walking trails that there is little to no excuse not to go out and explore.

5. Put Down the Technology

With tablets, laptops, smartwatches, and our beloved smartphones we seem to be connected to the outside world but not with the people and pets around us. However, disconnecting from our screens is important, not only for our own health but also for our pets. A short 30-minute brisk walk means exercise for both of you and time away from your screen.

6. One on One Pet Time

Everybody loves quality one on one time, even dogs. Going for a walk is just you and your canine’s quality time together. Walks are also great for interacting with other dogs out for their walk or patrolling your “hood” for pesky squirrels. You might even get some amusing videos or photos of your outdoor adventures.

If getting up to exercise has lost its appeal, there is one furry family member that will never tire of the activity. So strap on those walking shoes and show your pooch you are committed to your health and his.
