Staying hydrated is important. The same is true for our pets. While pets are especially susceptible to dehydration in the hot summer months, dehydration can strike at any time. Here are some tips to help keep your pet hydrated, as well as symptoms that may signal dehydration.

Keeping Pets Hydrated

Typically both cats and dogs will keep themselves hydrated, permitting fresh water is available. Some pets can be picky about dirty bowls, placement of water dishes, and other issues. In those cases, it may be necessary to put a little extra effort into getting your pet to drink enough water. Here are some ways to improve your pets' drinking habits.

  • Change the type of bowl you use for water (stainless, ceramic, etc.)
  • Try a pet fountain: some pets like fresh running water better than still water
  • Switch up the location of the dish: some pets don't like their water near their food bowl
  • Make sure the bowl is out of the sun and cleaned frequently

If you are worried your pet is not getting enough water, you can also add some water to their food.

Signs of Dehydration

Always monitor your pet's water intake, especially in the dog days of summer. If you are worried about your pets' hydration, you should definitely take him or her to your vet right away. Some signs of dehydration to watch for:

  • Refusal to drink
  • Lethargy
  • Dry mouth
  • Loss of appetite
  • Skin that slowly returns to place when gently pulled (try a fold of skin on the back of the neck or between shoulder blades to perform this skin test)
