Fall is an exciting time. It's back-to-school for kids, with new schedules for sports and other after school activities. It's seems everyone's having a great time. Everyone, that is, except for your family's dog, who may feel more than a little confused and left out of the excitement!

Summertime is Adoption Time

Many families choose the summer months to adopt a new dog or cat. The warmer weather allows for outdoor training, and the long summer days and fun outdoor activities are great for bonding with the family. However, the sudden change in schedules with the start of school can be a difficult time for pets.

Your Dog's Back-to-School Routine

With a little planning and forethought, you can make sure your canine friend adjusts well to your family's new routine.

  1. Sit down together as a family and work out a routine that can be followed on a regular basis. Carving out time for regular walks and a dependable feeding schedule is important.

  2. Choose a tried-and-true favorite toy and make it the one you give to your pet just before you leave for the day. Put it away when you get home, so it truly becomes the special toy you give your dog that says, "Don't worry. We'll be back soon!"

  3. Make a game of hiding special treats your dog loves so she can find them while you're gone.

  4. Encourage your children not to get so busy that they forget to spend time with their canine friend. An established daily play time just before dinner or homework can work out great.

Despite your best efforts, some dogs really don't do well when they're home alone. Our facility has a great doggy day care called Dog Day Camp. With fun activities, healthy exercise, and lots of opportunities for socialization, it's a popular place for local dogs to hang out when their families can't be with them. Contact us at Intermountain Pet Hospital and Lodge today if your special friend would like to join us!
