Moving time can be stressful for you and your family. The upside is, at least you know what's going on. Your family's dog, on the other hand, may be just plain bewildered. Fortunately, there's a lot you can do to help your pup adjust to his new surroundings. Here a few tips to make things easier:

Go Sniffing!

Setting aside some time to allow your dog to get familiar with the new neighborhood is a great way to help him feel less anxious.

  1. Find a great place for walks. Exercise is important for decreasing anxiety and maintaining overall health. Make it a priority to find a safe places for walks and exercise as soon as you move into your new neighborhood.
  2. Get to know the neighbors. It's important that your dog get to know the neighborhood pack. When getting acquainted with other pet owners and their dogs, break the ice by letting them know your dog's temperament in advance. Make sure to use a leash in case things get out of hand.
  3. Find a good veterinarian and dog boarding facility. Don't wait until an emergency or unexpected trip arises to secure important services. Allow yourself plenty of time so you're comfortable with your choice when the need arises.

Home Sweet "New" Home

Your pup may be really confused about his new digs. Make him feel comfortable by taking care of his needs as soon as you arrive. First, make sure your dog's eating area is established and that he knows where it's located. Equally important is that your dog's bedding, toys and favorite items are put in a quiet corner and ready when he wants to use them.

If you're new to the neighborhood, stop in to the Lodge at Intermountain Pet Hospital to check out our dog boarding facilities and holistic veterinarian services. We'd love to meet you and your pup!
