Summertime is hot, and just like us humans, many pets enjoy cooling off in the water. While many dogs appear to be natural swimmers, it's important to keep water safety in mind any time your pet is near water. Here are some tips to help keep your pup safe in and around the water.
Water Dogs
Does your dog like the water? If it's your first time taking your pooch to the water, remember that not all dogs like going in. If your dog does like water, remember that not all dogs know their limits. As you consider your dog's relationship with water, keep these things in mind:
- Never, ever force your dog into the water
- Watch for exhaustion
- Use a doggie life jacket
Bodies of Water
There are many types of places you might take your pet that have water. Lakes, creeks, rivers, and streams are popular places for pets and other users. Because there are so many potential hazards in any situation, be sure to scope out your surroundings before heading off to frolic. Look out for:
- Water that smells bad
- Broken glass and other sharp objects like rocks
- Fishing lines and hooks
- Fast moving water and undercurrents
- Algae and other water contaminants, especially in lakes and ponds, can be toxic. Don't let your pet drink too much of still water
Boats and Pools
Taking pets on boats or into pools requires additional precautions. Here are a few:
- Make sure your dog has access to fresh water
- Don't keep your pup in the sun too long
- Invest in a life jacket
- Watch your pet in case they become scared of the boat or things in and around pools
