Find me on:

In late 2022, IPH merged with Dr. K's Pet Clinic to become a full-service pet hospital. Once the merger was complete, we got right to work. We obtained the space next to the existing hospital and started the process of building out the wellness center of the hospital. The wellness center was completed in 2023, and a remodel of the original clinic began to transform it into an urgent care center. Now in 2024, we are ready to start accepting urgent care appointments.

What is the difference between an emergency and urgent care?

Urgent Care:

  • Urgent care is for non-life-threatening conditions requiring prompt attention but not immediately critical. It is similar to urgent care for humans.
  • Examples: Minor wounds, vomiting/diarrhea for less than 24 hours, mild allergic reactions, limping, ear infections, etc.
  • Wait times: Typically, shorter than emergency care, but can still vary depending on patient volume.
  • Cost: Generally, it is less expensive than emergency care, as services are less intensive.

Emergency Care:

  • Emergency care is for life-threatening situations that demand immediate medical intervention. Time is of the essence!
  • Examples: Severe bleeding, difficulty breathing, seizures, poisoning, severe trauma, heatstroke, inability to give birth.
  • Wait times can be longer due to the critical nature of cases.
  • Cost: More expensive than urgent care due to specialized equipment and procedures.

Here are some additional tips to help you decide:

  • If you're unsure, err on the side of caution and seek emergency care. It's better to be safe than sorry.
  • Consider your pet's overall health and behavior. Is your pet lethargic? In pain? Having trouble breathing? These signs often warrant emergency care.
  • Call your regular veterinarian first if possible. Your pet's doctor may be able to advise you on the best course of action, even if they're not available themselves.
  • Keep a list of emergency and urgent care clinics handy to find one quickly in a stressful situation.

Remember, your pet's health is your top priority. Don't hesitate to seek veterinary help if you're concerned, and hopefully, this information will help you make the right decision!
